21-year-old dead after house fire in downtown Charleston; 2 firefighters injured

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - One person has died early Saturday morning after a house fire on Smith Street in downtown Charleston.

The Charleston County Coroner's Office says 21-year-old Olivia Saylor from Atlanta, GA died on the scene from smoke inhalation.

The Charleston City Fire Department responded to the fire around 4:35 a.m. Saturday after receiving an emergency call that a two-story house was fully engulfed in flames.

Mark Ruppel, the public information officer for the City of Charleston, said that two firefighters sustained minor burns from the blaze, but both were treated at an area hospital and released.

The St. Andrews Fire Department also assisted the Charleston City Fire Department in battling the fire.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the house fire.
