CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Payments for veterans and their families are gathering dust at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
According to the department most of the unclaimed money comes from life insurance policy pay outs, dividend checks and premium refunds.
The department's director for insurance told the Wall Street Journal that the VA keeps a payment returned by mail indefinitely.
Some of these payments have been held for years on end at the department.
Veterans and their families can find out if money is owed to them by going to the department's website or by calling 1-800-669-8477.
You will need the veteran's name and possibly their birth and death date.
For common names you may need the veteran's VA insurance file number, which can typically be found at any county courthouse.
The department requires identifying information for any veteran who appears to have unclaimed payments before any money changes hands.
