CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Citadel cadets are heading to a wind-swept island on Charleston Harbor to re-enact what's considered the first shots of the Civil War.
About 20 student and faculty re-enactors will be on Morris Island on Saturday to mark the 150th anniversary of the firing on the steamship Star of the West.
The vessel was carrying supplies and 200 federal troops and was attempting to ressuply Fort Sumter, but the cadets fired on it and forced it to turn back.
The engagement is deeply ingrained in the history of the college. The best drilled cadet still receives the Star of the West Medal each year and the Star of the West scholarship is 1 of the most prestigious at the school.
