CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) –A 3-year-old boy who received a heart transplant this week is still recovering, but is expected to leave the intensive care unit by Monday.
It took six months for a match to be found for 3-year-old Dylan Gillespie, but Wednesday morning he had a heart transplant.
Gillespie received a heart transplant Wednesday morning. Gillespie's grandmother says the new heart is beating on its own and he is doing great.
At 10 p.m. Tuesday, the Gillespie family got the call to report to MUSC for the transplant., but after hurrying, they had to wait again because the donor heart was snowed in up in Washington, D.C.
Twelve hours after arriving at the hospital, Gillespie's heart made it to the Lowcountry after a long journey.
For the next few hours, doctors are making sure everything is correctly connected and the bleeding is subsiding. Doctors say the first 24 hours are tricky, because there is a chance Gillespie's body will reject the heart.
