Tips for safe winter weather driving

(Source: CNN) (Source: CNN)

(CNN) - Snow and ice storms are wreaking havoc from the northeast to the southeast and snow is on the ground in 49 or the 50 states.

All that wintry weather creates dangerous road conditions.

If you have to get behind the wheel, AAA has some safety tips for you.

Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up. Also, if possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.

Do not use cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces.

Accelerate and decelerate slowly, which helps tires regain traction and avoid skids. And remember, it takes longer to slow down on icy roads.

Don't drive while you're fatigued and don't power up hills.

The best advice? Stay at home until the deep freeze thaws.
