Author visits Charleston to discuss early Civil War action

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A noted Civil War author is visiting South Carolina to discuss the Star of the West skirmish in which Citadel cadets fired what are believed to be the first shots of the war.

James Lee Conrad lectures Thursday at the military school in Charleston.

In January 1861, cadets fired on the Star of the West, a ship attempting to bring supplies to Union-held Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor.

Conrad is a native of Pennsylvania who served 22 years in the Air Force. He began writing about the war in law school.

His first book was "The Young Lions: Confederate Cadets at War." It described the role cadets from military schools, including The Citadel, played in the Civil War.
