Summerville H.S. security officer fired after second DUI charge

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A Summerville High School security guard was fired Tuesday after he was arrested on DUI charges.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol charged 48-year-old Samuel Wade Mazell, of Summerville, with DUI and open container after Mazell's 2008 Toyota pickup went into a ditch on Mentor Street Monday night.

School officials say Mazell was employed with Dorchester District 2 and worked at Summerville High School as a security officer.

A Dorchester District 2 spokeswoman said later Tuesday that Mazell had been fired.

Dorchester County school spokesperson Pat Raynor says each employee undergoes a criminal background check through state law enforcement before they are hired and their references checked.

About a third of the district's 2,800 employees are given background checks each year. Each background check ranges from free to $25 each.

This is Mazell's second DUI charge. He was also charged in October 2009. He has not gone to trial on that charge.
