Missing boater now wanted for lewd act upon a child

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The Florence County Sheriff's Office has announced an arrest warrant has been issued for the man previously thought missing in the Murrells Inlet area, and say the hunt is on.

Sheriff Kenny Boone with the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said they are currently searching for Harvey Cox, 58, of Florence, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

Capt. Brett Camp, spokesman for the Florence County Sheriff's Office, said the warrant has nothing to do with Cox's disappearance.

In fact, the warrant is for lewd act upon a child under the age of 16.

According to Camp, multiple incidents allegedly took place between July of 2008 and January of 2011 at Cox's home along Laurel Lane.

Camp said deputies have not spoken to anyone that has seen Cox since Sunday, and said deputies were not searching for Cox prior to his disappearance. According to Camp, there is no indication that Cox's disappearance is connected to the charges against him.

On Tuesday, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources spotted Cox's abandoned boat in the Murrells Inlet area. A search then began for the missing man.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Murrells Inlet/Garden City Fire Rescue, and the Georgetown County Sheriff's Office assisted in the search.

On Thursday, Russell Goodale, spokesman for GCSO, said the search was terminated, and investigators discovered Cox had taken a cab from the Murrells Inlet area to Florence County Monday night.

According to Goodale, Cox was last seen Tuesday just after midnight.

Anyone with information as to the whereabouts of Harvey Cox is asked to contact the Florence County Sheriff's Office at 843-665-2121 or Crime Stoppers.
