Sheriff’s Office: Woman comes home to find burglar

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) – The Dorchester County Sheriff's Office arrested a 23-year-old man on Thursday after he was found by a woman in her home in Summerville.

Authorities have charged Peter Campbell with burglary and breaking and entering. It all started around 7:30 am when a 49-year-old woman was returning to her home on Oakdale Lane after remembering that she had forgotten her laptop.

According to authorities, when she returned home, the woman noticed that her door was partially open and when she opened the door she saw Campbell in her home.  When she asked the man what he was doing in the home, the suspect said that he must have gone to the wrong house.

The victim told deputies she asked the man if he was robbing her and if he had taken anything and the man replied "No ma'am;" the man then walked out of the home.

A police report indicates that the woman followed the suspect who then started running. The victim then called authorities.

When authorities arrived, the woman said that she had noticed that her laptop was missing.

Police were able to locate the suspect as well as the woman's missing laptop and other items which included:

  • a red acer aspire laptop
  • a silver colored one dollar dated 1971
  • a gold ring with white pearl (belonging to the victim)
  • a blue Sylvian portable DVD player
  • 6 colored clear stones,
  • A silver band with 5 small clear stones

Campbell was placed on a $5,000 bond and may be facing other charges.
