Charleston County Aviation approves layout for airport expansion

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Aviation Authority approved a layout plan on the Charleston International Airport expansion project.

The plan includes extending two concourses and adding a third baggage claim. All this to help move the new traffic Southwest will bring along.

Airport Director Sue Stevens says this new expansion will help with airport traffic for decades to come. The approval of the plan on Friday was the first step to making it happen. Next, they must submit for Federal Aviation Administration approval.

Southwest will offer seven direct flights a day all starting March 13. They will have three flights direct a day to Baltimore/Washington, two flights to Chicago Midway, one flight to Nashville and one flight to Houston Hobby Airport.

Southwest also has connection flights which makes the low cost carrier provide a total of 116 flights a day to 14 different destinations.
