COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Authorities have charged a Spartanburg County woman with animal cruelty after they say she hanged her nephew's pit bull with an electrical cord and burned its body because it chewed on her Bible.
Animal control officers say 65-year-old Miriam Smith told them she killed the 1-year-old female dog named "Diamond" because it was a "devil dog" and she worried it could harm children in the neighborhood.
Authorities say the dog was kept outside on a chain, and its body was found under a pile of grass.
Smith was arrested Sunday and charged with felony animal cruelty. She faces 180 days to five years in prison if convicted.
She remains in the Spartanburg County jail. Officials say she doesn't have an attorney and there was no phone number listed for her.
