WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - The controversial coal ash landfill will be on the table Tuesday night at Walterboro's City Council meeting. The meeting begins at 6:15 p.m. at city hall.
On the agenda is a resolution opposing the construction of the landfill.
SCE&G bought 1,700 hundred acres of land and wants to use about 200 acres for the site, which is roughly 10 percent of the property between Sidneys and Pleasant Grove Road.
Nearly 200 people came to a neighborhood meeting last week to express health, environmental and economic concerns about the coal ash landfill.
After Tuesday night's meeting, the next step is a meeting set for Jan. 27 to learn if local officials should approve the landfill.
The permitting process may take as long as five years with another year to build the landfill if the plan is accepted.
