Clevinger leaves The Citadel

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -  The Citadel baseball team's quest to defend its Southern Conference championship just became a little harder.  A few days before practice starts, starting pitcher Michael Clevinger, is off the roster, and no longer a cadet.

Collegebaseballdaily.com reported he was kicked out of school, but the military college says that is wrong, saying Clevinger left school for personal reasons.

He made the SoCon's all-freshman team last year, going 5-3 with a 5.15 earned run average. That includes a 4-0 mark in league play.

The Citadel tells Live 5 Sports Clevinger will probably transfer to a junior college closer to his hometown in Florida.

Clevinger was expected to be the number two guy in the Bulldogs' starting rotation this season.
