COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Gov. Nikki Haley's choices to lead South Carolina's prisons and drug abuse services are before Senate committees.
Confirmation hearings are scheduled for Thursday for Corrections nominee Bill Byars and Robert Toomey, Haley's pick to lead the Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services.
Byars was the juvenile justice director under Gov. Mark Sanford. Haley wants to merge juvenile justice and probation and parole with corrections under Byars' leadership. Haley also wants to combine drug abuse services with South Carolina's mental health services agency.
Haley's Cabinet choices must be confirmed by the full Senate. Senators first question nominees in committee. So far, they've confirmed her picks to lead the state's commerce, labor and health agencies.
