Parris Island Marine recruit dies from meningitis

PARRIS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) – According to the United States Marine Corps, a female recruit of the Oscar Company 4th Recruit Training Battalion died Saturday afternoon in the hospital from a case of meningitis.

Recruit Keerica R. Allen, 19, from Atlanta, Ga., died at the Medical University of South Carolina at around 4 p.m. Saturday from complications of a suspected case of meningitis.

Approximately 175 to 200 people aboard the recruiting station in Parris Island came in close contact with Allen have received the antibiotic as a precaution.

The MCRD says no one else at this time has displayed symptoms of meningitis.

The last confirmed recruit death due to meningitis was in December 2001.

Authorities are still investigating the incident.
