HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - As mobile devices become more sophisticated, some experts believe people may fall victim to cyber criminals who track your location thanks to a cell phone.
Geotagging allows social media sites to learn exactly where you've updated your status or taken a recent picture. Sometimes that information can be seen by anyone your friends with, and if your settings aren't right it could be seen by people you don't even know.
"Make sure the friends you have on there are friends you really know, when you've got 700+ on there, odds are there is somebody you don't know," said Sgt. Lori Avant with the Horry County Sheriff's Office.
Computer experts recommend disabling features like "auto-tag" or "location services" to help prevent would be criminals from learning of your every move. Those same experts believe virus protection software can also be used to prevent cyber criminals from reaching any personal information you don't want shared.
