CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Hundreds of people came out to shuck oysters to raise money for the Sullivan's Island Fire Department Saturday. Over $10,000 dollars was raised for the department.
Fire Chief Anthony Stith says it's probably one of the biggest crowds he's ever seen.
"We've been doing it about 20 years now and it's a major fund raiser for the squad," says the Fire Chief. "All the money we raise for this goes to buy equipment for the rescue squad and also the maintenance of the rescue squads equipment."
Stith says the crowds the fundraiser brings gets larger every year. That means the department has to bring in more oysters.
"An oyster roast is expensive to put on – it's unbelievable," says Stith. "A lot of people wouldn't understand. It's about 19, 20 thousand dollars for oysters. When everything's paid we hope to have made 15 thousand dollars."
The first thing Stith says the Fire Department will purchase with the profits is a new outboard motor for the fire boat.
