BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Berkeley County schools have a new leader.
Wednesday was Rodney Thompson's third day on the job. Before taking over as superintendent, he was the district's chief administrative officer.
Thompson has also served as a teacher and principal. He replaces Dr. Anthony Parker. Thompson stopped by the Live 5 studios to talk about his plans for Berkeley County Schools.
"The budget is going to be a challenge, statewide and nationwide. What we would like, is to be transparent as possible as we work through this process," Superintendent Thompson said."I can't sit here today and tell you it's not going to be painful. We're going into this budget with approximately $20 million less than we had three years ago with a thousand more students."
Thompson said that an in depth look is needed at school programs as well as making data driven decisions.
"Berkeley County is one of the fastest growing areas in the state. We cannot compromise the educational process for this generation of children," Thompson said. "So we're going to have to roll up our sleeves and figure out how we can provide a great education with limited resources."
