CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Charleston police charged two men with possession with intent to distribute marijuana after making an arrest at a West Ashley apartment complex earlier this week.
Officers were on foot patrol Monday night in the area of the Shires Apartment complex and the Saint Andrews Gardens Apartments in reference to numerous narcotics complaints and weapons law violations. Officers observed a black Dodge Charger that was running, parked in front of building 32 in the Saint Andrews Gardens apartment complex.
As officers approached the vehicle, they noticed one of the suspects, 23-year-old Jeremiah Mitchell of Kirkless Abbey, with a green plantlike material in his hand. Officers believed the substance to be marijuana because of its odor. The suspect was asked to step out of the vehicle and he placed the substance on his seat.
When the driver was asked to get out of the car, he pushed one of the officers and fled on foot towards the Shires apartment complex. One of the officers was able to catch up to the suspect, 23-year-old Tramel Hamilton of Pineview Road.
A Department of Motor Vehicles check revealed that Hamilton's license was suspended and that he had four previous convictions in the last five years.
During a search of the vehicle, officers located a large shopping bag in the back seat which contained two large gallon sized bags of marijuana. A field test confirmed the substance to be marijuana. About 722 grams of marijuana was seized.
Hamilton was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana and driving under a suspended license. Mitchell was charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
