ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Two weeks after an Orangeburg County woman was found stabbed to death in her home, investigators have made an arrest in the case.

Carolynne Hanton's husband found her stabbed to death on February 3 inside the couple's Goff Avenue home. Thursday afternoon, Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell announced that Cleophas Edwards, 22, is charged with killing the 44-year-old during a burglary.

Ravenell said deputies were serving warrants for probation violation at Edwards' house, and found a computer matching the one missing from Hanton's house. "It was just good instinct and police work," said Ravenell. "This day and time everyone has a computer in their home, but for that deputy to look more into that computer, it solved a case we've been working so hard to solve."

Investigators say Edwards confessed to the crime, saying he stabbed Hanton with a kitchen knife when she fought back.

Ravenell said Edwards told deputies he did not know Hanton, and didn't think she was home. Previously, investigators believed Hanton knew her killer because there were no signs of forced entry.

Edwards lives less than a mile away from Hanton.

According to investigators, four young children Hanton was caring for were inside the home and witnessed the brutal murder.

Edwards will be arraigned at 2:30pm Friday.
