Oxygen tank explodes in Newberry house fire

NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - Authorities said an explosion heard in the city of Newberry early Saturday morning was the result of an oxygen tank exploding in a house fire.

Friendly and Prosperity Fire Departments were dispatched to a home off Glenn Street around 2:00am. When they arrived at the scene, firefighters and deputies with the Newberry County Sheriff's Office said they saw an explosion.

Sheriff Lee Foster said the resident in the home had breathing problems and used a compressed oxygen cylinder. He said when that cylinder heated, it caused the explosion.

No one was injured in the incident.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
