Coroner: Columbia man drowns in 3 feet of water

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - A Columbia man died Tuesday after the Fairfield County coroner said he slipped, hit his head, and drowned in about three feet of water.

Coroner Barkley Ramsey said 25-year-old Joseph Bond was fishing with his uncle at Lake Monticello. Around 4:00pm, Ramsey said Bond told his uncle he was going to fish in a small pond across the street.

Almost three hours later, Ramsey said Bond's uncle found him face down in the small pond. Crew were dispatched to the scene where Bond was pronounced dead.

Ramsey said it appears Bond's fishing line got caught, and when he went to get it, he slipped, hit his head, and drowned. He said Bond was only about 10 feet away from his fishing spot when the incident occurred.

According to Ramsey, the family expressed that Bond was a good swimmer.
