WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) – The St. Andrew's Regional Library hosted an all-day Civil War Event on Saturday in West Ashley.
Lowcountry residents was able to step back in time to experience the bravely and sacrifice of one of the nations' first all black regiments as the 54th Massachusetts Company 1 Civil War Reenactment Regiment set camp on the lawn of the library.
They had Civil War period clothing, weapons and equipment on display. The event included musical concerts by the Plantation Singers, Bob Smalls and the African Drum Circle and Hip Hop Hooks on Black History.
Joseph Mc Gill Jr., founder of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, was also on hand to give information on what black soldiers had to endure during the Civil War.
