Mayoral candidate believes he's the target of vandals

ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) - ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) - St. George Police are looking for suspects who vandalized an abandoned building with disturbing graffiti next to the name of a mayoral candidate.

The graffiti, written Sunday night on the former Dukes Hotel, included a bulls eye next to the name of a write in candidate for the upcoming mayoral election.

Town Councilman Rev. Oscar Odom believes he is the target of the graffiti, possibly because he's trying to become the town's first African American mayor.

Odom says he has no idea who's responsible, but he believes whoever did it doesn't want him to win the April 5 election against incumbent Anne Johnston.

"What damage can I do other than being black?", said Odom. "They don't want to see a black mayor, that's the only reason I can think of."

He says he will ask the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the FBI to investigate the vandalism.

Mayor Johnston, who hopes to be re-elected, said she was so disappointed to hear about the act of vandalism and that it made her sick.
