North Charleston police officer involved in wreck, released from hospital

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston police officer has been released from the hospital after her police cruiser hit a light pole and slammed into a tree on Michaux Parkway early Tuesday morning.

The accident happened around midnight near the Dorchester Road intersection close to the airport when Ashley Thompson's police cruiser went off the roadway and struck a light pole. The car continued on and struck a tree.

The officer was taken to MUSC and released later on Tuesday morning.  She was coherent at the scene of the accident and was able to talk and answer questions.

According to highway patrol, nothing indicates anything out of the ordinary. Brothers did say it was raining at the time of the accident and that could have been a factor in the accident. The incident is still under investigation by the highway patrol.

It is unknown if the officer was responding to a call at the time of the wreck.
