SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - The winningest football coach in high school history will soon be adding another award to his crowded trophy case.
John McKissick has been the head coach of the Summerville High School football team for the past 59 years.
Over that time he has won more than 550 games, 10 State championships, and countless awards that fill the halls of Summerville high.
But, today he'll receive an award not for his or his player's accomplishments on the field, but how he has coached and mentored more than 4,000 young players, and helped them grow into men on and off the field.
He will be the first to receive the "Lifetime Youth Mentoring Award" from the Exchange Club of Charleston. Coach Mckissick is humbled that he's being recognized for doing the one thing he has loved to do for most of his life…coaching.
"I was real appreciative for them to recognize any success that I may have had over the years and it's a real good feeling" said Mckissick.
Coach McKissick is so appreciative of all of his accomplishments, but says all the awards and trophies he's received over his career have not been a single success, but a team accomplishment.
Coach McKissick was named high school coach of the year three times, and was inducted into the National high school football hall of fame in 1990.
