SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Officials at Roger Wood Foods are trying to figure out how an employee lost his arm. WTOC was told the employee was trying to clear a jam in a machine.
Management at Roger Wood Foods are working closely with OSHA in an investigation.
The accident happened shortly 10 a.m. Tuesday at the plant off Alfred Street. A 24-year-old man was rushed to the hospital with a severed arm after getting it caught in one of the company's blenders.
Corey McClimans, the safety manager for Roger Wood Foods, says within 30 seconds the employee had immediate medical attention. They were able to stabilize the situation until the ambulance could arrive. The employee was taken to Memorial University Medical Center where he underwent surgery.
"We are going to look at the situation and figure out what we could have done better. It did happen here and we need to make sure it doesn't happen again. That's our goal, to get to the bottom of it and let everyone go home safe," said McClimans.
Following the accident certain parts of the plant were shut down. OSHA is investigating.
As for the employee, we're told his family is with him and he's in stable condition.
