Cane Bay H.S. student identified after being hit, killed on bicycle

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - The Berkeley County Coroner says the bicyclist who died after being hit by a car Sunday was a Cane Bay High School student.

The accident happened just before 7 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 176 near Alexander Circle. The South Carolina Highway Patrol says both the bicyclist and the driver of a 1994 Mazda 4-door were traveling west on U.S. 176 when the driver of the car struck the bicyclist.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office identified the victim as 17-year-old Ronny Gallardo of Summerville. Gallardo was a student at Cane Bay High School.

"Cane Bay High School is mourning the death of senior Ronny Gallardo.  Ronny was a good kid.  He was a member of the A Honor Roll and a Junior Firefighter," said Cane Bay High School principal Dr. Lee Westberry. "He was liked by everyone, and had a wonderful way of bridging the gap between all students. He will be greatly missed."

Troopers say the driver of the Mazda left the scene of the accident, but returned about an hour later. Gallardo was taken by helicopter to MUSC where he later died.

The accident is under investigation by highway patrol and the patrol's M.A.I.T. team.

Cane Bay High School says it will continue to provide additional counseling support for our students as they mourn the loss of their fellow classmate. The school's video production class is also producing a video tribute to Gallardo, which will be aired school-wide as a memorial later this week.
