Police: Mother leaves three children in truck while shopping

GOOSE CREEK, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested a 26-year-old woman for leaving her three children in a truck while she and her boyfriend went shopping at a Walmart in Goose Creek.

The Goose Creek Police Department charged Michelle Mullis of Summerville with unlawful conduct towards a child.

On Saturday, police responded to the parking lot of the Walmart on 605 St. James Ave. for a report of children left unsupervised in a vehicle.

The officer said he saw a 2002 Dodge Dakota pick-up truck and noticed that there were three children inside; a 6-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy and a 3-year-old girl.

After searching for the parents, the officer asked the children where their parents were. The children told the officer that their parents were shopping.

A short time later, the mother arrived at the vehicle and started putting groceries into the truck. The officer said he discovered that both the mother and her boyfriend, who has no relation to the children, were shopping inside while the kids were left unsupervised.

When police asked how long the children were left in the truck, both Mullis and her boyfriend said around 15 to 20 minutes. The officer then arrested Mullis for unlawful conduct towards children. Mullis then contacted her mother who took custody of the children.

According to a police report, surveillance footage showed that the children were left unsupervised for 24 minutes.
