Voters head to polls to pick Republican candidate for council

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Voters will head to the polls Tuesday to elect a candidate to fill Joe McKeown's seat on the Charleston County Council.

Four Republicans are vying to fill the District 1 seat which represents voters east of the Cooper River.

The candidates are Mark Smith, Herbert R. Sass III, Teddy Manos and Lisa Rollins.

If no one receives more than 50 percent of the vote, a runoff is scheduled for March 22 between the top two.

The winner of the Republican primary will face Democrat Richard Hricik in a special election on April 26.

McKeown won re-election last year, but resigned to take a job with newly elected Congressman Tim Scott.

The polls are open until 7 p.m.
