Suspect arrested for strong armed robbery, assault after allegedly stealing $5

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police arrested a man in reference to a strong armed robbery and assault that occurred Feb. 28 at a gas station on Sam Rittenberg Boulevard.

Officers arrested 29-year-old Joseph Anthony Chase, of 6329 Old School House Road, and charged him with strong armed robbery and first degree assault and battery.

According to police, the victim was walking toward the business entrance when Chase   approached her and asked for money to pay for gas. She was holding her small handbag and the $5 she was going to use pay for gas.

The bill dropped from her hand and they both bent down to pick it up.  He then grabbed her small handbag and the bill as he ran towards his vehicle. The woman chased him and was able to retrieve her handbag. The suspect quickly drove off with the victim's money.

The investigation continues.

Chase was being held in the Charleston County Detention Center.
