MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - In an effort to cut down on the number of fatal DUI crashes, a Grand Strand taxi company is proposing extending a holiday free rides program to a 365 day a year operation.
Diamond Cab Company, located in Myrtle Beach, is the same company responsible for the "Sober Ride" program that lasts from November into late Winter.
"$100, $500, whatever anyone can give, would definitely help the program." said Joshua Rouzi, a manager at Diamond Cab.
The service allows bartenders to call the service and arrange for a free ride home for any drunk customers. Over the 2010 holiday season, the service was so successful that funding ran dry quicker than expected.
"They need to go and get bars to participate and get the bars and liquors stores, anyone selling the beverages should be a part of making it safe." said Myrtle Beach Mayor John Rhodes.
There is no word yet on when the year-round service would begin but organizers hope they'll be able to operate the "Sober Ride" program once tourist season arrives.
