Pain at the pump: will joining a membership club give you relief?

Reported by Ashlea Kosikowski – bio |email

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - Gas prices in Wilmington are as high as $3.55 a gallon.

Some say they've found the secret to saving.

Membership clubs seem to consistently have the lowest prices.

At Costco, the price for a gallon of gas was $3.45 on Wednesday, which was the cheapest price in Wilmington.

At Sam's Club, the cost was $3.48 per gallon.

"My wife and I just got a membership a couple weeks ago and you couldn't ask for a better time to do it," said Sam's member Aaron Kazulis.

He said the membership is paying for itself.

Chelin Pardieu agreed. Pardieu is an employee at Bob King Auto Mall. The dealership has a business account at Sam's club.

"We save quite a bit," said Pardieu. "It's worth it, definitely."

Is it worth it for you?

A membership at Costco is $50 a year; at Sam's, it's $45.

We did the math.

If you have a 16 gallon tank and you're saving, on average, 10 cents a gallon every time you gas up, it would take about 30 fill ups for your membership to pay for itself.
