Georgetown deputy, wife charged with cruelty to animals

GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - A Georgetown County sheriff's deputy and his wife have been charged with cruelty to animals after an internal investigation.

The Georgetown County Sheriff's Office says it received a complaint on March 4 about three dead dogs at a residence on Dennis Drive. Near the residence, deputies found three dogs deceased in fenced kennels in various stages of decomposition.

Deputies attempted to make contact at the residence with no results. While attempting to make contact, deputies found a female lab with nine puppies on the porch of the residence.

During the investigation it was determined that the dogs belong to Deputy William Baxley. Baxley was placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation. Upon completion of the investigation, Baxley was placed on administrative leave without pay and charged with four counts of cruelty to animals under the county ordnance.

Miranda Baxley, the deputy's wife, has also been charged with four counts of cruelty to animals.
