Tons of trash scattered around city

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) - Cleaning crews spent the morning picking up after the thousands of people that celebrated Saint Patrick's Day around the city.

Sanitation crews started picking up after bars closed at about 3 a.m. and didn't finish until 6 a.m. Friday. You could not walk down River street without stepping on a discarded cup.

City officials expect it to be even worse this weekend. They are encouraging people who go out downtown to use trash cans instead of throwing their trash on the ground.

"We are cleaning up after the party, as we do every year," said Residential Refuse Collection Department Head John Denion. "We already have River Street ready to be swept. We have the ramps cleaned. The street has been cleaned, blown and swept. We have taken out all of the litter baskets and replaced them. We are ready now to bring our sweepers in and get everything up and get out of here and let people start doing it all over again."

Cleaning crews expect to collect several tons of trash over the weekend.
