MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) – The top two Republican candidates for Charleston County Council District One will face off Tuesday in a special election.

Earlier this month, four candidates competed for the nomination, but none received more than 50 percent of the vote. Now, Mark Smith and Herbert Sass, the leading vote getters, are in a runoff. Smith had more than 45 percent of the vote and Sass had nearly 35 percent.

The winner of Tuesday's election will face Democrat Richard Hricik on April 26.

The person elected will replace former councilman Joe McKeown. He stepped down to be Congressman Tim Scott's Assistant Chief of Staff.

Polls will be open until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
