Police arrest man accused of kidnapping, sexually assaulting woman

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - Police have arrested a 33-year-old man accused of forcing a 62-year-old woman into a wooded area and sexually assaulting her.

The Walterboro Police Department has charged Joel H. Green with first-degree criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping. The charges stem from an incident that happened on Aug. 29, 2010.

According to investigators, the suspect approached the victim who was walking to Oakwood Nursing Home to visit her husband.

The victim said that the man told her his name was "Thomas" and he went to shake hands with her. As the victim moved to shake his hand, he grabbed it, covered her mouth with his other hand and forced her into the woods, authorities say.

At that time, the victim said he removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her. The man then took her clothes and retreated deeper into the woods. The victim then ran out of the woods and went to Franklin Smalls' home for help.

"When I came around she recognized me and she said 'Mr. Smalls help me,' " he recalled. "I said 'what's wrong?' She said 'I was raped.' She kept saying she was raped. I realized she didn't have on any clothes. She had her shoes in her hand."

Green was identified through forensic evidence collected, according to police.  Anyone with any further information about the incident is asked to call the Walterboro Public Safety Department at 843-549-1811.
