Scott talks budget cuts during visit to Lowcountry

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Congressman Tim Scott is headed to Georgetown Wednesday after spending much of Tuesday night in the Tri-county.

Scott hosted a town hall meeting in North Charleston Tuesday to explain the challenges lawmakers are facing when it comes to the budget battle in Washington.

"The first thing we have to do is not tighten the belt," Scott said "We have to squeeze from the middle. We have to do more than simply tighten the belt. We have to cut things that are important to people. We simply cannot afford those things anymore. We have to cut there and we have to cut now."

Both Democrats and Republicans are struggling to compromise. Democrats have proposed nearly $50 billion in cuts. Republicans are backing nearly $100 billion.

Scott will answer questions at a fundraiser benefiting the Georgetown County Republican party Wednesday. The event starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Pawley's Plantation Conference Center.
