High winds, dry conditions increase SC fire danger

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Firefighters in Horry County are battling a woods fire threatening more than two dozen homes.

The fire in the Little River section of the county grew to about 50 acres and was being spread by wind gusts of 35 mph late Wednesday. Authorities said about 30 homes were in the area. Seven local and state fire agencies from both Carolinas were on the scene.

The fire spread as officials urged people to avoid any outdoor burning. Forecasters also asked motorists not to flick cigarettes butts out of their windows because those can also start fires.

The National Weather Service said the winds, low humidity and temperatures in the 80s will mean woods fires will spread quickly.

The dry, windy conditions are expected to continue through Thursday, especially along the coast.
