Third suspect arrested for obstruction in West Ashley homicide

WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Police have charged another man for obstruction of justice in a homicide that happened on March 1 in West Ashley.

Charleston Police arrested and charged 20-year-old Cornelius Robert Jenkins Jr. on Thursday.

James Javon Smith, 25, was shot on St. Clair Drive and later died at the fire station at 1775 Ashley River Road.

Jenkins was locked up at the Charleston County Detention Center. Through the ongoing investigation, detectives say they determined that Jenkins attempted to hinder or impede the murder investigation by concealing information about the incident.

Jenkins is the third individual charged with obstruction of justice in the case. The others are the victim's father 49-year-old Kennedy Smith and 19-year-old Brandon E. Smalls.

Frederick L. Flowers, 18, was arrested on March 11 and charged with murder in the incident.

The incident began when the victim was shot while he sat in a car in front of a home on St. Clair Drive. The driver, Kennedy Smith, of the vehicle then drove the victim to the fire station at 1775 Ashley River Road, where he died.
