Driver wanted for downtown Charleston hit-and-run

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Police are searching for the driver of a vehicle wanted for hitting a man in downtown Charleston and leaving the scene early Saturday morning.

The Charleston Police Department responded to Meeting and Huger Streets in reference to a hit-and-run involving a 20-year-old man.

Witnesses say that the man stepped into the roadway where he was struck by a red colored sedan or van. After the collision, police say the driver fled the scene. The victim was then transported to MUSC.

Officers say that the victim, who appeared to be intoxicated, said that he had been assaulted by two black males who tried to take his wallet. According to investigators, the victim "adamantly" denied being struck by a vehicle.

Three witnesses gave statements about the hit-and-run and a passenger side mirror from the suspect's vehicle was found at the scene. It is unclear at this time why the victim told police that he was not hit by a car.

If you have any information you are asked to call police.
