Police: Good samaritans shot at trying to stop pharmacy robbers

ORANGEBURG,SC (WCSC) - Authorities have arrested two Charleston men accused of robbing a grocery store pharmacy and shooting at two people who attempted to stop them.

The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office charged 30-year-old Jeffrey Martin Tranchida and 28-year-old Sean Phillip Smith with theft of a controlled substance, armed robbery and first-degree assault and battery.

According to investigators, the two men went into a Giant Discount Pharmacy in Orangeburg, took out a weapon and demanded employees give them prescription drugs. A sheriff's office report states that as the suspects were leaving the pharmacy, two citizens got in their vehicle and followed them.

As the citizens were behind the suspect's vehicle, one suspect fired shots towards the citizen's vehicle, deputies report.

Officers in the area saw the suspect's vehicle and forced the driver to stop.

"Without the citizen's assistance and the officers being in the area, this dangerous pair may have fled the area and not been caught," Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.
