Police report: Traffic stop leads to stolen handgun

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) – Police have arrested a Summerville man after authorities say they found a stolen handgun during a traffic stop.

The North Charleston Police Department charged Antonio Carlos Curnell with possession of a stolen handgun.

It all started on Wednesday when officers attempted to stop Curnell at the intersection of W. Montague Ave. and Dorchester Rd. after authorities noticed that a brake light was not working on his vehicle.

According to investigators, Curnell then continued driving, turned down a street, eventually pulling into a driveway and fleeing the scene.

Officers say they chased the suspect until they lost sight of him. A police report states that authorities found a loaded .38 handgun on the floor of the driver's seat.

Police officers say they also found a substance that tested positive for cocaine and three pills that tested positive for ecstacy while searching the vehicle.

Officers subsequently found the suspect on Montague Ave.

The suspect was locked up at the Charleston County Detention Center.
