Annual Flower Town Festival begins

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSCC) - The 39th Annual Flowertown Festival starts Friday. Vendors are anxiously setting up their booths, for an anticipated crowd of more than 200,000 visitors.

But what people don't realize is the festival is put on entirely by the YMCA and not the town of Summerville.

YMCA Marketing and HR Director Liz Graham said, "It started a long time ago by a group of women who wanted to sell arts and crafts to raise money for local recreation, and it just grew into the event it is today."

The cost of the three day event is over $300,000 and profits made are put to good use.

"All of our net proceeds go right back to the Y and it goes into our scholarship program," Graham said.

The festival features arts and craft vendors, local restaurants and every kids favorite funnel cakes and rides.
