Roaming gnome could bring new business to South Carolina

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - With more and more people turning to the Internet for online travel, one website's mascot could be an effective new way to bring visitors to the Grand Strand.

On Thursday, Travelocity's roaming gnome made his way to Myrtle Beach after spending several days traveling across the Palmetto state. Gnomey,, as he's known to some, traveled to Columbia, Greenville, and parts of North Carolina.

"It's quite the opportunity for the gnome to visit South Carolina, to see all the destinations we have to offer." said Chaunte McClure, a representative with the South Carolina's Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism.

The gnome will receive first class accommodations while in the Grand Strand at Myrtle Beach's Anderson Ocean Club. On Friday, the gnome is expected to spend time in a fully equipped spa, enjoy breakfast in bed, and sample Grand Strand attractions.

"We've got the staff completely prepped, we've got the bed extra soft in his ocean front suite." said Oceana's Resorts' Marketing Director Michelle Cantey.

The gnome is prominently featured in several Travelocity.com advertisements both on-line and on television. He's expected to travel to Charleston for more visits on Friday.
