ST. GEORGE, SC (WCSC) -

A man who spent the night at a friend's home in St. George was killed early Wednesday morning when the mobile home caught fire.

Officials are investigating after a fire engulfed at a mobile home located at 110 SE Railroad Ave. around 1 a.m. Wednesday. The fire claimed the life of Jeffrey Williams who was visiting a friend.

According to the Dorchester County Coroner's Office, Williams was spending the night with the homeowner and friend, Andrew Green. Green says that Williams decided to spent the night after the two had been drinking. Investigators also confirmed that alcohol was involved in the incident. Green escaped the fire without injury.

Green told authorities that after he went to bed he heard an explosion and then ran out of the home. Green says he thinks Williams may have tripped over a heater, but authorities have not determined what caused the incident.

Williams died from carbon monoxide poisoning and thermal injuries, according to the coroner's office.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and officials continue to investigate.
