Summerville man killed after car runs off road, catches fire

BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

One person is dead after their car struck another vehicle on Interstate 26 early Sunday morning, ran off the road and caught fire in Berkeley County.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, a 1998 Ford Explorer was traveling west on I-26 at mile marker 189 just after midnight.

The Berkeley County Coroner's Office pronounced 30-year-old Gerald Adam Metts of Summerville dead on the scene. Metts was wearing his seatbelt.

The car then ran off into the median, returned back onto the interstate and then struck a 2005 Nissan Maxima traveling in the right lane, also going westbound. The Explorer then ran off the right ride of the interstate, struck several trees and caught fire.

Both the driver and passenger of the Nissan were taken to Trident Medical Center by EMS.

A concerned citizen was reporting the Ford's erratic driving to the highway patrol minutes before the collision. The collision is under investigation.
