Deputy on administrative leave after killing suspect who grabbed gun

ST. STEPHEN, SC (WCSC) -

A suspect wanted for criminal domestic violence was shot and killed by a Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy Saturday night. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

According to the sheriff's office, the deputy was attempting to arrest the subject on a criminal domestic violence warrant shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday at a residence on 1229 Old Mill Rd. in St. Stephen.

While attempting the arrest, the subject grabbed the deputy's gun. The deputy fired the weapon, which resulted in the death of the subject.

The person shot by a the deputy was identified as 23-year-old Jerome Darby of St. Stephen.

An investigation is being conducted by The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. 

The name of the deputy involved in the shooting has not been released and he has been placed on administrative leave.
