Deputies: Parents lied about details of 3-year-old being shot

WALTERBORO, SC (WCSC) - The parents of a 3-year-old boy who was shot Saturday night admitted to authorities that their initial report of the incident was false. According to the parents, the boy was accidentally shot while inside the residence in their presence.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Office says that investigators are still trying to determine exactly what happened when the child was shot and who the shooter was. Criminal charges may be sought against the parents and others as soon as all the facts and evidence are obtained, according to a news release sent Tuesday by the sheriff's office.

Deputies were called to Colleton Regional Hospital's emergency room Saturday in reference to a 3-year-old that was brought in by his father with an apparent gunshot wound to his left leg Saturday night.

The child's father told authorities he was inside his home on Coot Lane near Walterboro while his son was playing with some other friends in the backyard on the trampoline. The father said he heard a couple of gun shots and then his son came walking up the back steps bleeding from his leg. He then took his son to the emergency room.

Hospital officials told deputies that the child had at least one gunshot would to his left knee and maybe another grazing wound in the same area.

The child has been released from MUSC and is reported to be in good condition. According to the Department of Social Services, the child is not in the custody of his parents at this time.
