DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Police arrested five teens Tuesday after responding to a strong-armed robbery in St. George.
St. George Police responded to a robbery call near the corner of Park Street and Minus Street around 7:45 p.m. Upon arrival, a 56-year-old man told officers that he was leaving the Dollar Store when he noticed that he was being followed by five teens.
The victim said he stopped walking so that the suspects would have to pass him. After they passed him, the victim said the teens walked into a public park, so he continued on his way.
Once he reached the park, the victim said that all five teens jumped a fence and attacked him, stealing his wallet and throwing him into a ditch.
The victim gave police descriptions of the suspects, and officers began searching the area for the robbers. As one officer headed south on Park Street, towards Raysor Street, he saw a group of young males who matched the description given by the victim.
As the officer approached, the teens began running away, and a pursuit followed. Eventually, the officer saw one suspect, 17-year-old Johnny James, sneaking out of some bushes located behind the St. George Dental Care Office, and apprehended him. The victim confirmed that James was involved in the robbery.
Police then responded to 319 NW Railroad Avenue where they saw several suspects matching descriptions given by the victim. As officers approached, the suspects ran inside the home. After about 10 minutes, all four suspects exited the home and were arrested by police.
Jarrette Hankerson, 17, was identified by the victim as also being involved in the robbery and the three juveniles were also charged with strong-armed robbery.
All five suspects were taken to the St. George Police Station. Three of the suspects are juveniles.
